Zaros lake

The artificial lake of Zaros, also known as Votomos, is located on the southern slopes of Mount Psiloritis, just 1 kilometer north of the village of Zaros and about 45 kilometers southwest of Heraklion. It is a unique natural and tourist destination that combines stunning natural beauty with the rich historical and cultural heritage of Crete.

Before 1987, the area where the lake now lies was a small wetland formed around the crater of the Votomos spring. In that year, the Forestry Service undertook a major renovation project, creating an artificial lake that now retains the abundant waters of the spring. Since then, Votomos Lake has become an oasis of life and coolness in the heart of Psiloritis.

The name ''Votomos'' is well-known to Cretans, mainly due to the popular bottled water company of the same name, which produces the famous ''Zaros'' water. The name ''Zaros'' derives from the ancient particle ''Za'' meaning ''much'' and the verb ''reo,'' meaning ''to flow''.Thus, Zaros means ''the place where much water flows,'' a fitting description of the area's abundant and pure waters.

The lake is surrounded by dense vegetation and plane trees, creating a lush green landscape perfect for relaxation and leisurely walks. Along the lake’s shores, there is a tavern and a café where visitors can enjoy traditional Cretan dishes, with a special focus on fresh trout and salmon farmed in nearby ponds next to the lake.

For families and younger visitors, there is a playground, while specially arranged areas with benches and tables offer ideal spots for picnics, allowing guests to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature. The walk around the lake is short but enchanting, as the rich greenery and water create a serene setting that refreshes the mind and rejuvenates the visitor.

Zaros Lake is not only a natural gem of Crete but also a place that promotes ecological awareness, sustainable development, and recreation in harmony with the environment. It is a destination well worth visiting, whether for a brief stop during your journey or a peaceful nature retreat.
