Komos Beach stretches over 2 kilometers in length and about 40 meters in width, covered with soft, golden sand formed by natural dunes around rocks and shaded by characteristic tamarisk trees. This unique landscape offers a calm and idyllic atmosphere, making the beach an ideal destination for those who love nature and absolute freedom. For this reason, it is considered one of the top naturist beaches in Crete.
At the southern end, the beach is organized and well-maintained, featuring umbrellas, sunbeds, tavernas, as well as modern facilities such as toilets and showers. The cleanliness and water quality are excellent, making the area perfect for lovers of the marine world.
The Komos area holds significant archaeological value. Excavations carried out in 1976 revealed evidence of a large Minoan city dating between 1800 and 1200 B.C. Archaeological work began as early as 1924, when the famous archaeologist Arthur Evans discovered large storage jars in the area. Komos was an important harbor connected to the Minoan palaces and housed massive stone complexes.
The naturist zone occupies the northern part of the beach, starting from the archaeological excavation site and extending for about half a kilometer. Towards the back of the beach, the tamarisk trees provide cool shade, ideal for relaxation while enjoying the view of the waves.
Komos Beach is also an important habitat for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta-Caretta) and is strictly protected. Each year, the area is monitored by the organization Archelon, which works to preserve and protect the turtle nests. Visitors are urged to be especially careful, avoiding disturbing the nests and refraining from helping the young turtles during their critical journey to the sea, as this struggle is vital for their survival.
Furthermore, visiting the beach at night is prohibited to avoid disturbing the natural nesting and hatching processes of the turtles. Environmental protection is a top priority: visitors are asked not to litter on the sand and to keep the beach clean to preserve its natural beauty and wildlife.Discover the enchanting combination of natural beauty, historical heritage, and environmental respect at Komos Beach — a true paradise in Crete!
