Frangokastello is one of southern Crete’s most enchanting coastal spots, offering a unique blend of history, legend, and natural beauty. This quiet seaside village takes its name from the Venetian castle that still stands proudly on its shore, a historic monument steeped in centuries of stories and tradition. Located just 13 km east of Chora Sfakion and 80 km south of Chania, Frangokastello sits on a serene plain beneath the towering White Mountains (Lefka Ori).

The main beach of Frangokastello is truly idyllic, with soft golden sand and shallow, crystal-clear waters that make it ideal for families with young children. The beach is organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and nearby tavernas and cafés, ensuring a comfortable and relaxing visit.

However, the area is exposed to southern winds, which can occasionally be strong and blow sand along the beach. If the wind becomes bothersome, consider heading to one of the quieter beaches west of Chora Sfakion, where conditions are typically much calmer.

Frangokastello is widely known for the legend of the Drosoulites, ghostly apparitions of soldiers said to appear at dawn during early summer. These shadowy figures seem to march silently along the shore, and while science offers no clear explanation, many locals and visitors have reported sightings over the years. The phenomenon adds an element of mystery and awe to this already captivating place.

To the west of the main beach lies the larger and more rugged Vatalos Beach, a mix of sand, pebbles, and rocks that makes it perfect for snorkeling and underwater exploration. In the winter months, Vatalos transforms into a seasonal wetland, with freshwater pools that attract local wildlife and create a rich natural habitat.

Heading 10 minutes east on foot, you’ll discover the stunning beach of Orthi Ammos, famous for its towering sand dunes that slope gracefully into the sea. This more secluded beach is a favorite for visitors looking to enjoy peace, privacy, and unspoiled nature.
