Agios Nikolaos, the capital of the Lasithi Prefecture, is located on the northern coast of Crete, on the western side of the Mirabello Bay. The town’s name comes from the Byzantine chapel of Saint Nicholas, situated by the bay, which stands as an important historical and religious monument in the area. In the past, the area was known as Mandraki, due to the many pens with goats that spent the winter there, while locals from nearby villages still often refer to the town as “Gialos” (meaning “seaside”).
